BACKGROUND On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a 46-yeal old man was killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota after a police officer knelt on his neck for almost 9 minutes. Two other officers further restrained Floyd, who had been arrested for allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill. The death of George Floyd has triggered nation-wide protests and demonstrations against police brutality. The issue of negative interactions between law enforcement and civilians, especially civilians of color has been prevalent for many years. These interactions often occur between youth and law enforcement officials in public settings, including schools. At the June 9, 2020 Fresno Youth Commission meeting, the commission created the Police Statement Ad Hoc Committee, composed of Commissioners Duran and Keosakdy, with the tentative inclusion of 1st Vice Chair Martinez and Commissioner Gamble. The purpose of the ad hoc committee is to prepare a statement on police brutality and recommendations on police funding to City Council.
